SUPERMARKETS MUST GIVE PRODUCERS A BETTER DEAL

Angus MP Mike Weir has joined other MPs and pressure groups calling for greater action against the concentration of power in the big four supermarkets chains.  Mr Weir attended a briefing meeting on the campaign at the House of Commons this week.

Commenting on the meeting Mr Weir stressed that it was vital that all producers be treated fairly.

“We heard from a representative of banana producers from Costa Rica who detailed their fight for a fair deal and also from James Withers of the National Farmers Union of Scotland on some of the difficulties his members face when dealing with the major supermarket chains.  Both face similar problems in dealing with these huge companies.

“Supermarkets who claim green credentials and promote fair trade must recognise that these principles should apply equally to local producers.

“There are now rumours that either Marks and Spencer or ASDA may make a bid for Sainsburys which would concentrate power even more.  This is not in the interests of either producers or consumers.

“Scotland has a well deserved reputation for high quality food production, but that can only be sustained if our producers receive a fair price and a fair deal from the major supermarkets which dominate food retailing.  The Competition Commission is currently looking into the matter.  It is imperative that they recommend strong action in this area.”
