LOSS OF LICENCE CONTRACT "PUTS POST OFFICE NETWORK IN FURTHER JEOPARDY"

The loss of the contract to issue television licences will add to the misery faced by many sub post masters and put the post office network in further jeopardy says Mike Weir MP, the SNP Westminster Spokesperson on Trade and Industry.

Commenting on reports that the contract is to be transferred to the Paypoint network Mr Weir said

“The loss of this business will be a further devastating blow to the Post Office network, already reeling from the decision of the Department of Work and Pensions to end support for the Post Office Card Account. “

“The network is suffering death by a thousand cuts with pieces of business being chipped away. This can only increase the uncertainty amongst both staff and the public and put the Post Office network in further jeopardy.”

“The UK government cannot continue to ignore the social aspect of the Post Office network and simply treat it as another business. Their inexplicable decision to transfer benefit payments to banks undermined the network and their subsequent announcement of the ending of support for the Card Account has exacerbated the situation. If they do not take action the once proud network is in danger of collapse.”
