DON’T ABANDON BIOFUELS URGES WEIR
Mike Weir MP, SNP Westminster Energy spokesperson, has urged the UK government not to completely abandon the search for sustainable biofuels in face of attacks on them due to the current world food crisis.
Speaking at DEFRA Questions in the House of Commons today (Thursday) Mr Weir said that sustainable biofuels could still play a part in fighting climate change.
Commenting, Mr Weir said:
“Biofuels have been strongly attacked as a result of the current world food crisis. Clearly the development of biofuels may be a contributory factor but there are many other factors, not least the effects of climate change on cereal growing regions like Australia and Central Asia.
“The idea that stopping biofuel production in the United States will lead to that production switching to food production for developing nations is, at best, simplistic.
“We must continue to seek alternatives to fossil fuels and should not abandon the search for sustainable biofuels, particularly second generation fuels from non food crops.”
