MP SUPPORTS FREE CHRISTMAS PARCELS FOR ARMED FORCES
Angus MP Mike Weir is supporting a parliamentary motion calling on the government to reduce the cost of parcels being sent to forces personnel serving overseas and to introduce free postage over the Christmas period, as was done last year.
Commenting on the move, Mr Weir said:
“With 45 Commando presently serving in Afghanistan this is especially important for local families during the approaching Christmas period.
“It is always difficult for families when their loved ones are serving overseas, especially so when they are in dangerous postings like Afghanistan or Iraq. Contact with home is also vital for the troops’ morale.
“However, the cost of posting parcels can be heavy for many families and with Christmas approaching I hope the government will again recognise the importance of this matter and introduce free postage for the families of our troops.
“There is, however, a wider issue of the cost of such parcels at other times. Clearly in the areas where they are serving troops have to be constantly on the alert. Small luxuries from home mean more in such situations and I hope the government will recognise that postage should be free all year round.”
