Welcome for Cairnie Street Post Office Public Meeting

Angus MP Mike Weir has welcomed the public meeting called by Arbroath Community Council to discuss the proposal by the Post Office to close the sub post office at Cairnie Street , Arbroath.

The Meeting is to be held at Arbroath Town Mission on Thursday 19th June at 7pm.

Commenting on the move Mr Weir said there were serious concerns about the proposals to close Cairnie Street.

“I have already received several representations on the subject. As I anticipated the main area of concern is whether the Abbeygate Post Office will be able to deal with the increased level of business as, even now, there can be lengthy waits at busy times. I have also, however, received other letters giving a more personal view of how individuals will be affected by the closure.”

Mr Weir has long campaigned against the UK government’s closure programme but stressed that the need now was to focus on the impact of the specific closures.

“The whole closure programme is, in my view, wrongheaded and unfair in the way it operates but it is being implemented and we cannot simply ignore or wish away its terms.”

“The reality of the situation is that any campaign cannot be about whether there should be closures but whether the particular closure should be made.

“It is vital that any campaign is a community based one. The community must make their feelings known to the Post Office and make clear the impact that closure will have on the local area and local people.”
