WEIR JOINS CALL FOR CLIMATE CHANGE BILL

BLAIR’S NUCLER OBSESSION LEADING UP A BLIND ALLEY

Mike Weir MP, SNP Westminster Spokesperson on Energy, has joined with a large number of environmental and other organisations in calling on the Prime Minister to ensure that a Climate Change bill is included in the next Queens Speech, due in November.

In their letter to the Prime Minister they state

“While this is clearly a global challenge, in the UK we must make our fair share of the reductions.  The challenge is to reduce emissions steadily over a period of time stretching way beyond the tenure of any one Government or any one Prime Minister.  Keeping our total emissions over the next fifty years within a limit requires a “carbon budgeting” approach that determines how much we allocate to each year.  Long-term targets simply are not enough – the route to the target is critical to whether or not we prevent the worst of the predicted impacts.”

The politicians and organisations signing who have signed the letter call upon the Prime Minister to introduce a Climate Change Bill to start a constructive debate on the way forward and to create a framework that can be agreed across parties.

Commenting on the move Mr Weir said it followed on from previous attempts to create a cross party political consensus on climate change.

“The Scottish Parliament has been prepared to adopt much more challenging targets than Westminster to tackle climate change, yet many of the levers of policy are, unfortunately, still controlled by London.

“We need urgent action to deal with climate change but Mr Blair’s nuclear obsession is taking us down a blind alley. The SNP’s recently published energy review shows the way to a non nuclear energy future that would make a real difference to climate change.

“An independent Scotland could be a world leader in action to tackle climate change.”
