WEIR ADDS HIS NAME TO MOTION SUPPORTING FARMERS’ CAMPAIGN

Angus MP, Mike Weir, has added his name to the Early Day Motion which supports Farmer’s Weekly’s Local Food is Miles Better Campaign.

Commenting on the EDM, Mr Weir said:

“I strongly believe that buying locally grown food is an excellent way for consumers to reconnect with farmers and develop a better understanding of where their food comes from.

“You only have to look at how successful farmers’ markets have taken off here in both Forfar and Montrose to see that people have an interest in locally produced and sourced food.

“It must also be recognised that producing and buying food locally can help the environment, boost the economy, and at the same time, support farming in Angus.

“We must remember that bringing in food from all corners of the world is bad for the environment, bad for freshness, bad for food security and bad for traceability.  That is why we must strive to make local purchases.

“I call on the big supermarkets to promote, stock and label locally produced food to cut food miles and support local producers.”
