LATEST WATCHDOG BACKED ENERGY PRICE RISES BEGGARS BELIEF

Angus MP, Mike Weir has reacted angrily to Ofgem’s agreement in allowing energy companies to increase household bills further next year, in order to pay for suggested improvements in the infrastructure of the network.

Speaking from his constituency office, Mr Weir said:

“Ofgem’s excuse to grant this latest price increase really does beggars belief.  Rather than defending the massive profits of the energy companies, Ofgem should be fighting to decrease fuel bills not helping to increase them further.

Scotland currently produces six times more energy than it requires but this latest announcement is yet another failure by the industry watchdog to protect already hard pressed consumers, who have had to endure huge increases in the last year, in order to shield energy company shareholders from costs.

“To stop more and more pensioners and families from falling into fuel poverty, it is time that Ofgem carry out its remit and force energy companies to dig into their huge profit barrels to pay for infrastructure improvements.”
