WEIR SLAMS ENERGY COMPANIES EXPLOITATION OF THE POOR

SNP Energy Spokesperson, Mike Weir MP, has described findings by Energywatch Scotland that vulnerable people are being charged almost GBP300 more per years for gas and electricity, as shameful.

Mr Weir, a long-term campaigner on energy and consumer protection issues, who proposed safeguards on pre pay energy meter prices during the progression of the Energy Act 2004, said:

“It is utterly shameful that energy companies are cashing in on vulnerable customers. By and large, pay and go meters are used by the poorest in society, so it is disgraceful that these companies are hammering those that can least afford it with the highest prices.

“The idea that people can just switch energy suppliers to get a better deal is laughable. Many of those on pre pay meters do not actually have bank accounts, or have problems with debt, and so they are unable to take up special deals.

“Energywatch’s findings confirm that energy companies are only interested in well-off customers who can pay by direct debit.

“This exploitation must end, and Ofgem should take action to protect the interests of vulnerable customers.”
