Weir Supports Launch of National Autistic Society Campaign “I Exist”
Angus MP Mike Weir attended the launch of the National Autistic Society campaign “I Exist” at the House of Commons. The aim of the campaign is to highlight the problems facing adults with autism and to push for greater facilities.
Commenting on the launch Mr Weir said that needs for adults with autism cut across the responsibilities of the UK government, Scottish Government and local authorities.
“It is clear from research that 63% of adults with autism do not have enough support to meet their needs. In addition 60% of parents say that a lack of support has resulted in their son or daughter having higher support needs in the longer term.”
“As parents get older they clearly have worries about what the future hold for their adult children. It is imperative that support needs are looked at by all levels of government.”
The campaign is to have a separate Scottish launch at Holyrood within the next few weeks.
