Weir Attends Best Rural Retailer Event
Montrose Butcher Piped in National Final
Angus MP Mike Weir today attended the presentation for winners of the Best Rural Retailer event at the House of Commons. The event was organised by the Countryside Alliance and was to celebrate rural businesses throughout the UK.
Commenting on the event Mr Weir said
“Local butcher Watts of Montrose won the Scottish regional heat although, unfortunately, the UK wide prize went to a Welsh firm. It is good to see local Angus retailers doing so well in such a national competition. “
“It was fascinating to hear about the many rural businesses who have taken their traditional base and developed highly innovative businesses. It is heartening to see so many fighting back against the advance of the chain stores.”
“Many local retailers in Angus not only provide an excellent service but help other local businesses. Several butchers, for example, list the sources of their meat from local farmers.”
“The awards are an excellent way to promote the wide variety of local retailers and farming based businesses in the rural economy. Nominations for next year’s awards open in September and I hope many Angus businesses will go forward next year.”
