ANGUS MP SIGNS UP TO INTERNATIONAL ARMS TRADE TREATY

MIKE WEIR MP VISITS OXFAM ARBROATH SHOP TO SUPPORT CONTROL ARMS CAMPAIGN

Angus MP, Mike Weir, visited Oxfam’s Arbroath shop today [Saturday] to sign up to Oxfam’s ‘Million Faces Petition’. The petition is part of its Control Arms campaign which is calling for an International Arms Trade Treaty on conventional weapons.  Mike Weir is taking part in a sign-up day occurring in Oxfam shops all over Scotland.

Campaign supporters want governments to use a United Nations’ conference taking place next month to start the process of agreeing an arms trade treaty that would ban the export of arms to countries where weapons are used to abuse human rights or defy humanitarian law. To date forty-six countries have signed up to an International Arms Trade Treaty.

Speaking of his support for the Control Arms Campaign Mike Weir MP said:

“Lax gun control results in a huge loss of life and that is why we must secure an international agreement governing the transfer of arms. One thousand people die every day as a result of armed violence, and many more lives are left impoverished by the suffering it brings.

The UK government must use its influence at the UN conference in June to make legally binding controls a reality. I would strongly urge people in Angus  to visit their local Oxfam shops in Arbroath,Forfar and Montrose to sign up to  support this campaign ”

Lynda Stuart, Shop Manager of Oxfam Arbroath added:

“We can all play a part in strengthening support for the call to Control Arms. Oxfam shops are at the forefront of local campaigning efforts to establish agreements which will end the continual fear of armed violence for millions of men, women and children. People in Arbroath are signing up to a petition which demands an end to weapons getting into the wrong hands.
