ANGER AT
PO PRIVATE TRIAL IN SCOTLAND
Angus MP, Mike Weir has reacted angrily to news that Scotland will be the first
area in the UK to trial mail delivery from the private sector. Mr Weir who has
previously attacked the UK Government’s instance on opening up the Royal Mail’s
delivery services to competition now fears that services outwith the main
Scottish centres will come under threat.
“This is a sad day for mail delivery services outside Scotland’s central belt
who are now threatened by a Labour Government intent on bringing to an end the
centuries old universal service.
“It is obvious that private companies will cherry pick the more lucrative city
areas while the remainder, towns and rural areas, will be left either with a
reduced or non existent mail delivery service.
“Already in the Angus Glens new applications for newspaper deliveries have
stopped. How long then will it be before rural communities have to retrieve
their own mail?
“The Royal Mail was once the envy of the world but thanks to ill-judged
Government meddling this public service stands on the edge of extinction.”
