ENERGY PRICE STILL TOO HIGH DESPITE REDUCTION CLAIMS ANGUS MP
Angus MP Mike Weir has given a cautious welcome to Utility Centrica’s announcement that its Scottish Gas unit will be cutting prices of energy by 17 percent for gas and 11 percent for electricity. However, Mr Weir questioned why hard pressed Scottish Gas customers were not being given these prices reductions now rather than having to wait a further month.
“Given that the wholesale gas price has been decreasing for several months now, this announcement is long overdue. However, you have to question why Scottish Gas are holding off until March when most of the coldest weather will have passed.
“Many Scottish Gas customers in Angus, specifically pensioners and low income families, have already fallen through the fuel poverty trap door, and many more will be teetering over the edge due to the high fuel prices over the current winter months.
“Despite this promised price reduction, the fact of the matter is that energy prices remain extremely high in Scotland, a nation which produces surplus energy. With better supply lines being introduce, Scottish Gas and the other energy companies should be reducing their prices quicker.”
