BUDGET: WEIR COMMENTS ON ENERGY TARIFFS AND WINTER FUEL ALLOWANCE

Commenting on remarks by the Chancellor that five million customers on pre-pay meters should get a "better deal", and that energy companies should commit £150m on social tariffs, SNP Westminster Energy spokesperson, Mike Weir MP, said:

“Once again Alistair Darling has failed to take any real action. Despite the numerous pre-budget leaks and macho posturing his announcement is little more than a vague commitment to continue talking to the energy companies.

“Beleaguered customers need action now, not more promises of perhaps getting some relief at some indeterminate time in the future.

“This is a pathetic response to the huge misery faced by energy consumers throughout the country as prices continue to rise, and energy companies report record profits.”

Welcoming the increases in the Winter Fuel Allowance, Mr Weir said:

“This will go some way to helping pensioners face their escalating bills, but even here the Chancellor has failed to acknowledge the massive problems faced by the many other vulnerable people, and their families, who also face the need for increased heating but still get no help.”
