WEIR LAMBASTS SCOTTISH SECRETARY’S UNCONCERN FOR FISHING INDUSTRY

Angus MP, Mike Weir, has strongly criticised the Scotland Secretary, Douglas Alexander, for his “complete unconcern” for the fishing industry in Scotland.

Mr Weir made the comments after raising at Scottish Questions the recent report on the effects of climate change on cod stocks in the North Sea.  The report noted that cod were moving north due to warming seas.

“This report is a potentially vital piece of research that backs up the views of local fishermen and could be vital in obtaining a better deal for Scottish fishermen”

Mr Weir had asked the Scotland Secretary of he would press his colleagues at DEFRA to oppose any cuts in quota before this new evidence was fully considered.  Instead of replying Mr Alexander launched a bitter attack on independence.

“Clearly the Scotland Secretary is more interested in attacking the SNP rather than standing up for Scotland’s fishermen.   Incredibly he seemed to defend the Common Fisheries Policy which has been such a disaster for fishermen in Angus.

“This was an appalling display of ignorance and exposes his complete unconcern for an important local industry.”
