STILL A GREAT DEAL NEEDS TO BE DONE AFTER DURBAN TALKS.
Whilst welcoming the more positive than expected outcome of the Durban talks
in climate change Angus MP Mike Weir said that there still remained a huge
amount of uncertainty.
Mr Weir spoke on the outcome of the talks in the House of Commons today and
sought more details of the proposals to help those small nations already
suffering from Climate Change.
Commenting on the debate he said
"Whilst there proved to be more progress at Durban than most of us expected
there remains a worrying lack of detail. It is vital that this is filled in
quickly . It would be a disaster if talks again slip and we reach the next
summit with few concrete achievements."
" Although the conference agreed to a Green Climate Fund to assist
developing countries with adaptation it is far from clear where the funding
will come from. Similarly they are only now thinking of looking at ways of
ensuring developing nations get access to long term funding, but that could
be many years away."
"Even on the central issue of emissions although it was agreed that the
Kyoto agreement, under which countries promised to lower emissions , would
continue the details of how this would work were missing. Even under the
present agreement many countries failed to meet their promised reductions."
"Even that has now been thrown into doubt by Canada's
announcement that it is to withdraw from the current Kyoto accords."
"it is vital that we all increase our efforts to ensure that every nation
takes seriously the issue of Climate Change".
