SNP COMMENT
ON NUCLEAR SECURITY REPORT
SNP Energy Spokesperson Mike Weir MP today (Sunday) commented on an Office for
Civil Nuclear Security (OCNS) report that showed there were 39 lapses in nuclear
security rules in the past year. The OCNS is the government watch dog
responsible for ensuring nuclear power stations and radioactive waste facilities
are protected from terrorist attacks.
Mr Weir said:
"At a time when air passengers are being told they are not allowed any hand
baggage on aircraft, it is perhaps time for Government to wake up to the
importance of nuclear security.
"The Government and nuclear industry should be extremely concerned over this
report, which states that there were 8 breaches in information security and no
less than 26 breaches in site security.
"I urge the Government and industry to take this report seriously and look at
tightening security now, whilst acknowledging that nuclear energy is not a safe
long-term option."
