WEIR SUPPORTS RECALL OF PARLIAMENT

Angus MP Mike Weir is one of nearly 200 MPs who have joined together to demand a recall of Parliament to debate the situation in the Middle East and the security situation in the UK.

Commenting on the matter Mr Weir said that whilst the agreement at the United Nations was a welcome development the crisis was far from over

.

“It is deplorable that it took a month of horrendous violence before the United Nations could even agree a resolution. It is far from certain that the resolution will quickly end the fighting.”

“Very many of us have been appalled that the United Kingdom government refused to back international calls for an immediate ceasefire. It is the innocent civilians of Lebanon who have suffered most, caught in a vicious fight between Israel and Hezbollah.”

“Even humanitarian aid has been prevented from getting through to many areas of Lebanon. Israeli attacks have destroyed infrastructure and they have made clear they would attack any vehicles on the road.”

“A debate in Parliament would make abundantly clear to the present government that we do not support the unquestioning adherence to American policy.  I believe the majority of people in this country want to see an immediate end to the violence and urgent help to the people of Lebanon.”

Mr Weir also noted that the Israeli soldiers whose kidnap was the initial spark to the conflict had all but been forgotten.

“As a mark of good faith those holding the soldiers should release them  Perhaps then there would be a chance of real dialogue and peace.”
