SCOTLAND LOTTERY LOSERS
WESTMINSTER TO DIVERT £184 MILLION FROM LOCAL GOOD CAUSES
Figures published by the Scottish National Party (SNP) today (Monday) reveal that Scotland is set to lose out on up to £184 million of lottery funding which is being diverted to the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Locally, good causes in Angus will miss out on almost £4 million of funds for local projects.
Commenting on the revelations, Mike Weir MP said :
“These figures confirm fears that local lottery funding will be siphoned-off to meet the soaring cost of the London Olympics.
“Here in Angus we are set to lose out by over £3.9 million, which is money that should be going to benefit local charities and good causes.
“To make matters worse, local residents face a double blow as they will miss out on lottery cash for local causes, while subsidising the Olympics through general taxation as well.”
“It is clear that the cost of the London Olympics is spiralling out of control, and these figures are a dramatic warning that good causes across the country are set to pay the price.
“Of course the Olympics is great news for London, but good causes in Scotland, Wales and across the English regions should not be short-changed to subsidise these games. It is interesting to note that in London the Games are being spun as providing a fantastic infrastructure legacy for the city, yet in the rest of the country it is good causes that are having to pay the price.”
“The Olympics should be about encouraging more people to engage in sport, but by raiding lottery funds, the reality is that grassroots sports projects the length and breadth of the country will be sacrificed. That situation is entirely unfair.”
