Weir Addresses Glamis Public Meeting on Post Office.

Angus MP Mike Weir addressed a public meeting organised by Glamis Community Council to discuss the current Post Office closures and possible threats to local post offices. Mr Weir has previously had a similar meeting with Kirriemuir Landward East Community Council.

Speaking at the meeting Mr Weir made clear he was totally opposed to the current programme and repeated his warning that all communities in Angus should think now about what the closure or downgrading of their post office would mean to them.

“I have no more idea that anyone else as to which Post Offices in Angus will be affected, and will not do so until the proposals are made public. The public consultation process is a completely inadequate six weeks. This is far too short a period and communities must consider the impact before the proposals are published.”

He also outlined to the meeting the background to the proposals and outlined how the process worked.

“This programme is not about whether post offices should close but which post offices should close .The plan is basically working as a straightforward quota – i.e around 18% of post offices in each plan area must be closed under the system – in effect around one fifth of all post offices in North East Scotland must close and there must be a balance between urban and rural areas.”

Mr Weir emphasised that this process had very detrimental effects and could have the effect of pitting community against community

“One of the consequences of this is that when one post office is saved from closure as a result of public consultation then another post office is proposed for closure in its place – which to me is one of the most iniquitous part of the scheme.”
