WEIR CONDEMNS "RUTHLESS"
CUTS TO POST OFFICE NETWORK
SNP Trade & Industry spokesperson Mike Weir MP has commented today (Thursday) on
a ministerial statement by Alasdair Darling, Secretary of State for Trade and
Industry, that pointed to the imminent closure of 2,500 mainly rural post
offices throughout the UK.
Mr Weir said:
"This statement signals the end of hundreds of Post Offices in Scotland. These
ruthless cuts may well only be the latest staging post on the road to the 4000
that the Chief Executive of the Post Office says is the economic minimum.
"If the Government is serious about a proper sustainable network then they
should look not only at closures but also at opening offices in the current Post
Office free desert.
"Next May the people of Scotland have a clear choice between a Labour/Lib Dem
Scottish Government that has failed to stand up for Scotland on this issue or an
SNP-led Government that will ensure Post Offices have a future by opposing
Westminster's privatisation and competition plans."
