WEIR - OFGEM STATEMENT DISPLAYS INCREDIBLE COMPLACENCY

 

Commenting on news that the energy regulator Ofgem has today (Wednesday) said that there was no evidence that recent gas and electricity price hikes are down to collusion between suppliers, SNP Westminster Energy Spokesperson, Mike Weir MP, said:

 

"This statement displays an incredible complacency by Ofgem. One major energy company put prices up last week, another followed suit yesterday, and it would be a major surprise if the others did not follow on within the next weeks.

 

“It doesn’t take Inspector Rebus to see that this same process happens every time there is an increase. There is, at the very least, a very strong case for the operation of the energy market to be investigated by the Competition Commission.

 

"Ofgem's principal duty is supposed to be to look to the interests of consumers. Its obdurate refusal to tackle the issue of energy prices demonstrates its abject failure to do so. It is high time that there was serious consideration of the whole future of Ofgem.”
