Angus Consumers Could Save £2.5 million A Year – And Cut Carbon Emissions.
Angus MP Mike Weir has called for swifter action on the installation of smart meters and pointed out the very substantial savings that consumers in Angus could make with a switch to smart meters.
Commenting on research from the Energy Saving Trust Mr Weir said
“Smart Meters have the potential to make a real impact on both fuel bills and carbon emissions. If everyone in Angus switched to them the total amount of carbon savings is estimated at 15,100 tonnes per year, saving householders a massive £2,530,000 a year on energy bills.”
“That is a massive cost saving to consumers, but when you consider that the carbon dioxide savings equate to 5,212 car journeys or enough to fill Murrayfield Stadium eight times it shows what can be achieved by a simple switch.”
“The impact across Scotland would be even more dramatic with savings of £111,960.000 and a reduction in carbon emissions of 692,100 tonnes a year. “
Mr Weir added that the technology was available and some companies, including Scottish and Southern Energy, had carried out trials with customers.
“What is now needed is agreement on the type of meters to ensure that they are compatible for all companies and do not prevent switching, but most importantly a push by government to ensure that the companies do fit these meters for every consumer.”
