GOVERNMENT MUST PROTECT VULNERABLE GROUPS FROM CONTINUING ENERGY MISERY
Mike Weir MP, SNP Shadow Minister for Work and Pensions, has urged the Government to take action to help disabled and
other vulnerable groups in the face of continually rising energy costs.
Speaking on the day that Powergen announced yet another rise in prices
Mr Weir urged the government to take immediate action on the statement
made in the recent Energy Review.
"The Government have themselves recognised the problem and stated in the
Energy Review that they would consider help for groups other than
pensioners who were suffering from fuel poverty. They have said they
will consider rolling out schemes "after this winter". That is not good
enough. Action is needed now.
"Households with vulnerable people are suffering now in the face of
continually rising prices. Although some suppliers have schemes that
offer some assistance much more is needed to help those who face
particular problems due to illness or disability."
