DVLA DATA should not bE SHARED WITH PRIVATE COMPANIES
Mike Weir MP, SNP Spokesperson on Business, has welcomed an assurance from Transport Secretary Ruth Kelly that she will review access given to outside companies to the information held on drivers by DVLA.
Mr Weir raised the issue in the Commons during a statement on data loss by the department today (Monday).
Commenting following the exchange, Mr Weir said:
“We have now seen a succession of data loss disasters from this government. It is ludicrous, however, that private companies like those who run car parks can get easy access to data held by the DVLA.
“While Ruth Kelly assured me that she would review the matter, given the problems that have arisen, all government data should be retained by the government and not given to outside bodies.
“All drivers in the UK are obliged to give their data to the DVLA. That data should not be used as a commercial resource to allow private companies to pursue citizens for parking too long in a supermarket car park.”
