WEIR DEMANDS ACTION ON THREAT OF ENERGY COST INCREASE

Commenting on reports from the BBC that household energy bills could increase by as much as 40% this autumn as oil and wholesale gas prices hit record highs, SNP Westminster Energy spokesperson, Mike Weir MP, has called on the UK Government to step in.

Mr Weir said:

“Households are struggling to make ends meet now, never mind if there is a further hike in fuel costs in the autumn.

“The pressure of soaring energy prices, compounded by increasing raw material and fuel costs is crippling business, as well as domestic customers.

“People just cannot keep absorbing continuous and colossal energy price increases like this, and the Government must step in.

“Soaring prices are particularly hard to swallow when Scotland is such an energy rich country, yet faces steep rises in prices.

“We must have a top level review of the domestic and international energy market.

“Ministers need to take action to help long suffering domestic customers, as well as businesses which are being crushed under the weight of these additional costs.”
