WEIR URGES SWIFT ACTION ON TECHNOLOGY TRANSFERS

Speaking today (Tuesday) in the House of Commons during the statement on the outcome of the Bali conference, SNP Environment Spokesperson, Mike Weir MP, welcomed the agreement but noted its severe limitations. Mr Weir called upon the Secretary of State to clarify the amount, and timescale, for funding technology transfers to developing countries.

Mr Weir commented:

“Much has been said about the lack of targets for reducing emissions, but equally important is the lack of any clarity on the amount needed, and the timescale envisaged, for the transfer of technology to tackle climate change.

“We could contribute a huge amount through carbon capture technology, but the UK government’s dithering lost the opportunity presented by the Peterhead project and we are now in danger of falling behind in this technology.

“There is also a real danger that these discussions will simply drag on without any real transfer taking place, especially this side of the US elections. It is worrying that in answer to my question the Secretary of State was unable, or unwilling, to give either a figure or a timescale. If this drags on to the next meeting in 2009 it will be an absolute disgrace.

“The UK government must press the international community for swift action on this vital issue.”
