New Information Disaster Destroys Case for ID Cards
Everyone in Angus Should be Wary of Government Assurances
Angus MP Mike Weir has reacted angrily to news that the Ministry of Defence have lost the data of 600,000 people held on a laptop. Mr Weir had previously strongly criticised the loss of data relating to Child Benefit claims and drivers.
“For this to happen once is bad enough, but for three incidents of such huge amounts of personal data to go missing just reeks of sheer chaos at the heart of government. First of all disks were sent unregistered or protected, hard drives were sent to the USA and now we find, despite all this, MOD officials are carrying it about on laptops!”
“After the last incident we were told that there was a through review of data security throughout government. The news does not seem to have reached the Ministry of Defence.”
“The UK government must answer a fundamental question as to why after the previous lapses such a large amount of confidential information was held on one officers laptop? “
Mr Weir added that everyone
in Angus should be concerned at the UK government’s inability to follow
basic security protocols for personal information.
”This surely must be the death knell for their ill conceived plans for
identity cards. Why should the people of Angus entrust them with yet
more personal information? Why should be believe it will be any more
secure? “
“The UK government’s record on data security and IT projects is woeful and the ID card system should be abandoned now.”
