CONSUMERS SUFFERING AS ENERGY PRICES AND PROFITS INCREASE

 

SNP Westminster Energy Spokesperson, Mike Weir MP, has spoken out in advance of the expected announcement of windfall profits by Centrica and British Gas tomorrow. Mr Weir’s comments come as UNISON and the GMB warned that the UK energy market was not working in the public interest.

 

Mr Weir said:

 

“Yet again consumers are suffering as energy prices and company profits go through the roof.

 

“Now we have the added indignity of energy companies apparently set to announce massive profits partly due to the fact that they received carbon credits for free under the European trading scheme.

 

“Some of this money should be given back to hard pressed consumers rather than just shareholders.”
