WEIR DISMAY AS ENERGY FIRM ANNOUNCES RECORD PROFITS

 

Mike Weir MP, SNP Energy Spokesperson at Westminster, has today (Thursday) reacted with dismay to the massive rise in profits announced by British Gas and its parent company Centrica.

 

Mr Weir said:

 

“British Gas has announced a six fold increase in profits just a few weeks after hitting hard pressed consumers with a fifteen per cent increase in prices. This is arrogance on a huge scale.

 

“Consumers are being taken for mugs by energy companies whose justifications for their actions sound increasingly threadbare and unconvincing. Now more than ever there is a strong case for an independent investigation into the energy market.

 

“The often quoted alternative of switching suppliers simply is not a realistic option for many customers, especially the poorest who are being hardest hit by these vicious price rises. There are also clear questions about whether there is true competition in the UK energy market.”
