BROWN’S TAX CON WILL FORCE MORE INTO CHAOTIC TAX CREDIT SYSTEM
Angus MP, Mike Weir, the SNP Spokesperson on Work and Pensions, has expressed concern that the tax changes announced in the Budget will force more families into the “chaotic tax credit system”.
Mr Weir last year staged a parliamentary debate to highlight the problems faced by several families in Angus with the tax credit system. He is continuing to get many complaints about the system.
“At every surgery I get complaints about the tax credit system. Very many people are suffering because of mistakes and misinformation within the system. It is absolutely ludicrous that it appears that the system is unable to remedy mistakes quickly. Even when they acknowledge a mistake has been made.”
Commenting on the tax changes Mr Weir said that the lower paid may actually be worse off because of the abolition of the lower 10p rate.
“The Government say this will be offset by the tax credit they can claim, but this will mean more and more families forced into a system that is already in chaos.
“All MPs already receive numerous cases from constituents at their wits end with the tax credit system. There were over the last two years 750,000 complaints have been made about the system.
“Some of my constituents have told me that they will no longer claim because of the difficulties and stress that they have experienced. It is ludicrous that many more people will now be forced into this chaotic tax credit system.”
