SNP CONCERNED
OVER NUCLEAR WASTE TRANSPORT
Responding to a Greenpeace report today which published the timetables of trains
transporting nuclear waste through Scotland, SNP Energy spokesperson Mike Weir
MP commented on the concerning the nuclear waste situation.
Highlighting how close these trains come to urban centres and the potential for
an accident or attack Mr. Weir said,
"The publication of these timetables raise serious concerns about the transport
of nuclear waste across Scotland. It is alarming that this information is
readily available and that these trains regularly pass through large cities like
Edinburgh.
"The risk of a terrorist attack, or an accident could potentially expose
thousands of people to radiation. It is regrettable that waste should even exist
that needs to be transported, but in the meantime steps should be taken to
ensure that the safest transport can occur during these shipments.'
