WEIR COMMENTS ON ENERGY PRICE WARNING
Commenting on a warning today (Tuesday) by the bosses of the UK's biggest energy firms that households must brace themselves for higher bills, SNP Westminster Energy spokesperson, Mike Weir MP, has restated demands for a top level review of the energy market.
Mr Weir, who is a member of the Business and Enterprise Committee which was taking evidence form the firms, said:
“For households who are struggling to make ends meet now, the prospect of a further price hike is deeply alarming.
“While Ministers wring their hands over who is responsible, householders are heading for a winter of money misery.
“Government says it is powerless, and prices are due to global markets, while the energy companies say they have to pass on increasing costs.
“We need to know now who is benefiting from this. Government clearly rake in greater revenue, while none of the energy companies profits have, to date, shown a significant downturn and we are told by Opec there is no supply problem.
“Clearly the market is not working. We need answers and action now. Fuel poverty will rise fast if this situation continues to escalate.
“We must have a top level and urgent review of the domestic and international energy market.
“Ministers need to take action to help long suffering customers, as well as businesses which are being crushed under the weight of these additional costs.”
