AWARD OF MALAYA MEDAL TO LOCAL MAN

Mike Weir MP is pictured with Sydney Johnston and the medal he has recently received some 65 years after military service in Malaya.

Mr Johnston, a retired baker in Montrose, served in Malaya and Burma from 1946 to 1948 as part of the 25th Infantry Brigade. He was in Malaya at the start of the emergency and the country gained independence shortly after his departure.

Mr Johnston had read a recent comment from Mr Weir about another medal and enlisted Mr Weir’s help to establish if he had entitlement to any medal that reflected his service. The happy outcome is the General Service Medal with the clasp ‘Malaya’ which he has now been awarded by the Ministry of Defence.

Commenting Mr Weir

“I was very pleased to be able to assist Mr Johnston to get the medal after so many years. It is important that we continue to  recognise the bravery and service of those who served in our armed forces.”
