SCOTTISH SAMPLE OF UK POLL PUTS
SNP 7 POINTS AHEAD
ANOTHER INDICATION OF SNP SUCCESS AT GENERAL ELECTION
The Scottish breakdown of the YouGov poll in the Daily Telegraph today
(Friday) on Westminster voting intentions puts the SNP 7 points ahead of Labour.
Although the sample is small, it does confirm the trend of other Scottish voting
intentions for a Westminster general election.
If replicated at the polls, these figures would result in the SNP taking
25 seats at the next general election. Secretary of State for Scotland Des
Browne would lose his seat to the SNP.
SNP General Election Campaign Co-ordinator Mike Weir MP welcomed the poll,
saying the SNP is well positioned to deliver 20 seats, as set out by Alex
Salmond in his conference speech last weekend.
Mr Weir said:
“We are delighted with these poll figures, putting the SNP at 35% – double our
share of the vote at the 2005 General Election – and 7 points ahead of Labour.
Although it is a small sample size, these figures reflect the strong trend of
increased support for the party at Westminster. We are well placed to deliver 20
seats – which would result in a dramatic transformation in how Scottish
interests are treated by UK governments.
“Many Labour MPs’ nerves will be rattled as the effect of Gordon Brown’s rock
bottom unpopularity hits home.
“The Prime Minister’s dithering, delay and indecision on everything from the
election ‘that never was’ to the 10p tax rate is in sharp contrast to the
continuing success of the Scottish Government.”
