Weir Marks 25 Years of Energy Action Scotland

Campaigning Group Recognises Problems of Rural Fuel Poverty and Assisted Kirriemuir Energy Efficiency Scheme

Angus MP Mike Weir attended a lunch in Glasgow to mark the 25th Anniversary of the founding of Energy Action Scotland, which campaigns on the issues of fuel poverty and better homes in Scotland.

Commenting on the anniversary Mr Weir said

“It is perhaps ironic to be celebrating the silver jubilee of an organisation that was founded to tackle the problems of poor housing and fuel poverty since its continuing existence is an indication that there remain huge problems in this area.”

“Energy Action Scotland has, however, achieved huge advances over the last quarter of a century pushing fuel poverty high up the political agenda and forcing action from government and energy companies. As more and more families face spiralling energy bills its campaigning role is more crucial than ever.”

Mr Weir added that Energy Action Scotland was one of the few organisations that recognised the particular problems of rural Scotland.

“In Angus we have particular problems with houses that rely on home fuel oil and propane gas. Whilst most fuel poverty initiatives rely on tackling the big six energy companies Energy Action has consistently pointed out the difficulties faced by those rural consumers who do not have access to mains gas.”

“I was also delighted earlier this year to visit a project instigated by them for energy efficiency measures at the Kirriemuir Day Care Centre”
