MIKE ATTENDS LETHAM  AGM.

Letham and District branch of the Scottish National Party held their Annual General Meeting at the Letham Village Hall on Sunday.

Convenor Peter Ferguson gave an overview of the preceding year and thanked members for their sterling efforts both in fundraising and political activity, including especially their work in contributing to a wonderful result in the European election which saw the SNP outpoll the Tories nearly two to one in Angus.

Guest speaker Mike Weir MP addressed the meeting on the coming General Election and warned that the election should not only be about who sat in 10 Downing Street.

“The Tories will claim the election is about Brown or Cameron, it is nothing of the sort. It is about the future of Angus, and of Scotland, about the economy of Angus and the future of our public services. “

“Labour and Tories are engaged in an auction as to who can cut furthest. We should be looking at how we create jobs and make sure our economy is fit for the future. It is simply insane to propose swingeing cuts in public spending at a time when the economy is in recession.”

“If they are determined to make cuts they should look at the Trident missile system and hugely expensive and useless ID cards rather than core public services.”

“The polls increasingly point towards a Parliament in which no one has an overall majority. A strong group of SNP MPs can use this to protect Scotland and head off the ideologically driven cuts of the London parties.”

The main office bearers elected were

Convenor  Bill Roberton

Vice Convenor   Peter Fergusson

Secretary    Irene McGugan

Treasurer   Joan Racionzer
