MP URGES SUPPORT FOR AMNESTY INTERNET CAMPAIGN
Angus MP Mike Weir has pledged support for the campaign, launched today by Amnesty International, for political freedom on the internet . The campaign highlights the threat caused to freedom by internet censorship by oppressive regimes.
The campaign urges people to sign the following pledge
“I believe the internet should be a force for political freedom, not repression. People have the right to seek and receive information and to express their peaceful beliefs online without fear or interference. I call on governments to stop the unwarranted restriction of freedom of expression on the internet, and on companies to stop helping them to do it.”
Commenting on the campaign Mr Weir said that whilst everyone accepted the need for censorship of offensive, and especially pornographic , material on the net there was an increasing tendency for repressive regimes to try and control internet access.
“In many countries there is increasing censorship which, to their eternal shame, is being assisted by some major international companies who are willing to assist in incorporating censorship in search engines”
“The internet could be a huge force for good by spreading democratic ideals. We take these from granted but in many regimes there is strict censorship including, in some cases, spy cameras in internet cafes.”
“Amnesty International has fought against human rights abuses for forty five years. This new campaign deserves the support of everyone who believes in democracy and human rights.”
