NEW REPORT UNDERLINES CONCERN FOR FUTURE OF POST OFFICE NETWORK
Mike Weir MP, SNP Westminster Spokesperson on Trade and Industry has welcomed the publication of a new report on the Post Office by the Trade and Industry Select Committee, of which he is a member.
The report expresses concern for the future of the post office network and describes a “sense of betrayal” among sub postmasters over the Post Office Card Account.
Commenting on the report Mr Weir said it was imperative the government make clear what it intends for the future of the network.
Mr Weir said:
“This report underlines the grave concern there is for the future of the Post Office network. The continuing uncertainty as to whether subsidy for rural offices will continue after 2008 and what will replace the Post Office Card Account is undermining confidence amongst sub postmasters.
“I met members of the National Federation of Sub Postmasters during their lobby of Parliament last week. They were very disappointed by the lack of urgency from the Government in dealing with the problems of the network.
“The fundamental problem is that the government continues to view the sub post office network as just another business. It must accept that community aspect of the network, especially in rural areas and take action before it is too late.
“Next May the people of Scotland have a clear choice between a Labour/Lib Dem Scottish government that has failed to stand up for Scotland on this issue or an SNP led government that will ensure post offices have a future by opposing Westminster’s privatisation and competition plans.”
