WEIR: MOD IN APPALLING BLUNDER OVER TROOP PAYMENTS

Angus MP, Mike Weir, has reacted to the news that Royal Marines serving on the front line in Afghanistan have had a £3,000 allowance deducted from their wages following an “appalling blunder” by Royal Navy administrators.

Mr Weir has also written to Defence Minister, Des Browne, asking the government to make a one off payment to those members of 45 commando based in his Angus constituency and currently serving in Afghanistan to cover what they expected to receive over the festive period.

Mr Weir said:

“This is an appalling bureaucratic blunder by the Ministry of Defence.  It is particularly bad given that many of these affected are currently serving in very difficult circumstances in Afghanistan.

“It is bad enough that they are separated from their families over Christmas without having to suffer this additional financial worry.  The marines were promised this money and, understandably, many may have already made plans to spend this money to make a better Christmas for their families.

“The Prime Minister and Chancellor have both stated that the troops in the field should get everything that is necessary.  It is time for them to stand by their words and ensure that the men of 45 Commando are treated fairly.

“The Ministry of Defence must taken action and, at the very least, make a one-off payment to serving marines in Afghanistan to cover what they were expecting to receive over the festive period.”
