NEW BROWN BLOW TO LOW PAID WORKERS

CHANCELLOR KNOWINGLY HURT PENSIONERS AND POOR

The SNP’s Work and Pensions Spokesperson, Mike Weir MP,  today called for a fair deal for pensioners and the low paid following newspaper reports this morning that the Chancellor Gordon Brown changed the rules for pensions in 1997 despite receiving advice from his Civil Servants that such changes would hit pensioners and the low paid.

Mr Weir said:

“This decision is another slap in the face for pensioners and the low paid following the recent “tax con” budget.  Rather than protecting the interests of those who most need his support, Gordon Brown is now developing a reputation for abandoning low paid workers to help balance his books.

“By ignoring clear advice given to him in 1997 Gordon Brown turned his back on low paid workers in particular.

“This revelation will add insult to the injury felt by the low paid after the recent budget.”
